Story
Learning with my hands first.
As a boy I took things apart to see how they worked. That is how I decided to become an engineer. My first qualification was a diploma in marine engineering. In the evenings I added one certification each semester (arc welding, foundry work, refrigeration and air-conditioning repair, as well as three CAD systems), thus learning that knowledge lives in hands as much as in manuals. Then I started at a shop counter. Selling taught me the customer before the system. Later, a BSc (Hons) in European Engineering Business Management at Coventry University put the engineering and the commerce into one frame.

Where I give my time.
Be My Eyes
For more than a decade I have answered video calls from blind and low-vision people who need a pair of eyes for a moment, such as reading a label or checking a colour. It keeps me close to what technology is for, now that AI answers some of those calls as well.
British Heart Foundation, Bolton
I volunteered in one of its charity shops while I studied for my MBA.
gutenachtbus, Düsseldorf
I volunteered with this night bus, which brings food, clothing and conversation to homeless people in the city.
绿美花城 (Lumei Huacheng), Guangzhou
I volunteer to help this ecological business in Guangzhou. We are building its WeChat mini program, for nature-education courses, an eco shop and membership.
